ATLANTA, GA – Diversity in Aquatics, in collaboration with USA Swimming, proudly announces the 3rd Annual HBCU Celebration Swim Meet and Water Safety Festival. This event will take place during the Cricket Celebration Bowl weekend on December 13th and 14th at the Morehouse College Archer Hall Recreation Center, located at 830 Westview Dr. SW, Atlanta, GA.
This year, we are honored to celebrate the legacy of the late Harold “Bingo” Head II, a former Morehouse swimmer and Aquatics Director. Mr. Head has been a formidable advocate for the community and a leader in aquatics throughout Atlanta, making significant contributions to the YMCA, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Join us in recognizing his impactful work as we gather for this important event.
Join us for the Water Safety Day program on Friday, December 13, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. This event promises a wide range of exciting in-water and out-of-water activities for experienced and novice swimmers. You will gain essential water safety knowledge, learn proper swimming techniques or secure your spot in swim classes offered by local groups and nationally recognized organizations. Don’t miss out—click here to register now!
On Saturday, December 15, we will host the 3rd Annual HBCU Celebration Swim Meet from 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM. This meet not only celebrates but also showcases the talents of current and former HBCU students and supporters in the swimming community. Historically, there were around 21 swim, dive, water polo, and rowing programs at HBCUs until the early 1980s. Today, Howard University is the sole HBCU with a competitive swim and dive team. The HBCU Celebration Swim Meet marks a significant milestone as the first collaborative and competitive event in over two decades, uniting HBCU swimmers. For more information available at Diversity in Aquatics.
In December 2021, USA Swimming took a decisive step by launching the HBCU Swimming Grant Initiative to revitalize swim programs at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Morehouse College is proudly hosting the swim events as one of eleven HBCUs that have been granted funding for the 2024 cycle of the USA Swimming HBCU Grant Initiative. We are actively urging more HBCUs to apply for this grant opportunity. All relevant grant information is available at USA Swimming HBCU Grants.
All swimming events will be held during the Cricket Celebration Bowl weekend, prominently featuring the champions of the MEAC and SWAC conferences in football. For further details, visit the Cricket Celebration Bowl website.
