President & Chief Operating Officer
Joe Handy is the Georgia Aquarium’s President and Chief Operating Officer. In 2005, Handy moved to Atlanta to serve as Georgia Aquarium’s Director of Visitor Services. He was promoted to Vice President of Guest Experience in late 2006, became Senior Vice President in December 2014, and was named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in December 2015. He was recently named the Aquarium’s President in December 2016. In addition to his responsibilities at Georgia Aquarium, Handy is a committee member of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), as well as an active member in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Business Operations Committee.
Handy is also heavily involved in many community organizations. He is a member of 100 Black Men of North Metro Atlanta; the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Central Atlanta Progress Advisory Boards. He also currently serves on the Baker Street Advisory Board where he and other representatives from the Centennial Park District help make critical decisions about the area’s development. Handy was born and raised in New York, where he graduated with honors from The College of New Rochelle with a Liberal Arts Degree concentrated in Political Science. While in New York, Handy worked at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City for nine years and assisted in opening the Rose Center for Earth and Space. He also served as an appointed representative to a community board in Manhattan and was elected to serve as a delegate in the 2004 Presidential Election.
